Life in admissions changes too much for this, with shifting application numbers, academic strengths, etc. But what I can do is take a closer look at the denied students (an admissions post mortem so to speak), and give out some information on trends in our denied group. FYI-This is not a post about data on the overall denied applicant group, but only a view on some data which stands out within that subset. I apologize up front for the somewhat gruesome medical comparison, but if nothing else, it catches your attention. Core Course Rigor: One of the biggest correlation factors for applicants being denied was their course preparation for UGA, and for college as a whole. If you were going to prepare yourself to bat against a college baseball pitcher, you would probably not go the batting cage and dial that machine up to 40 MPH. The average college pitcher is going to throw a fastball in the 85-90 MPH range, so you need to prepare for it by setting that pitching machine dial on high. When we look at applicants at UGA, we are looking at every students academic rigor. For the applicants whose course selection was average or above average (as opposed to very rigorous or most rigorous), the chance of denial was over 96%. We know that some applicants have health and personal issues which cause some challenges to their academic rigor, and we take that into account, but most students do not have these limitations. Remember, we review course rigor by looking at what is taken in the five core academic areas ove r four years of high school in relation to what is offered at the school or in the community. As such, for those students/parents who think the best path to admission at UGA is to take the easiest courses, think again. Grades-Specifically core course grades:High school grades are the best factor in predicting college grades. UGA knows that applicants at times will face a challenge in certain courses, or trip up early in their HS career. But in looking at applicants with grades in the lower range (C, D and F grades), the chance of admission drops down. For students with C/D/F grades, the chance of denial is over 85%. On an even lower note, students with D/F grades chances of denial drop to about 96%. If a student has several C/D/F grades, they need to make sure and show that in their overall academic performance, these low grades are the exception, not the rule. This does not mean that we negatively focus on students just because they have C/D/F grades, but instead that the overwhelming majority of applicants and accepted students have extremely strong grades where the high majority are As. Depth/Dedication to Activities:This one is less about data and more about internal discussions both during and after our holistic review process. When UGA is looking at a students clubs, sports, work, volunteer service and other co-curricular activities, we are looking at how the student chooses to use their time and how in-depth their activities have been. We see a little bit of everything in our review of a students activities, and that is okay. But we at times will see some less active students who decide to pad their resumes with a number of one year only activities, usually in the 12th grade. While we understand students try new clubs and activities (and we are fine with that!), please know that our review of co-curricular activities is as much (or more) about depth of the involvement as breadth. When we see a sudden flurry of activities added to a students resume after 3 years of somewhat limited involvement, it makes us wonder why. Having a resume with a a range of activities which have depth and breadth does not mean admission, but the reverse can pose challenges. Humans are social creatures who build connections with others and thrive as companionship increases; however, relationships are often susceptible to failure. Holden Caulfield, the main character in the novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, experiences much frustration in his inability and unwillingness to form long-lasting social connections. Most of the people he comes across become â€Å"phonies† in his mind. Holden really only has true connections with his childhood neighbor Jane and his siblings DB, Phoebe, and Allie. With the exception of Phoebe, Holden’s relationships with Jane, his older brother DB, and his younger brother Allie, who passed away at a young age from leukemia, are all somehow hindered by distance. DB no longer lives with Holden and his family so they rarely see each other, especially since DB has become a successful movie writer in Hollywood. Holden’s relationship with Jane is merely composed of childhood memories which Holden holds on to. And although Holden still spiritually treasures his relationship with Allie, who has tragically passed away, Allie’s absence is a glaring relationship barrier. Holden’s relationships with the minor characters in the novel whom he is particularly close to show that even the strongest relationships can suffer if companions are distant from each other. Holden’s relationship with his older brother DB is an example of how distance can damage the firmest of relationships. Holden reminisces that when he was younger DB took him and Phoebe to go see the movie Hamlet together, appearing to be a kind older brother, since Holden mentions that DB â€Å"treat[ed] [them] to lunch first and then took [them]. He’d already seen it† (Salinger 117). This quote shows that DB truly cares about Holden and spending time with him, even if his own fun is jeopardized. Even though DB appears to be a caring older brother, it is obvious that distance has hurt his and Holden’s relationship. DB no longer lives with the rest of his family since he has become a Hollywood writer, and it is obvious Holden does not fully approve of this new d istancing from his older sibling. At the very beginning of the novel, Holden says, â€Å"He’s got a lot of dough, now. He didn’t used to. He used to be just a regular writer, when he was home[]Now he’s in Hollywood, D.B., being a prostitute† (Salinger 1-2). Holden resents the fact the D.B. is now living so far from home in Hollywood, and makes his sentiment apparent by sarcastically calling him a â€Å"prostitute.† Being such a long distance apart changes Holden and D.B.’s strong and caring brotherhood to a rather out-of-reach relationship, since Holden clearly dislikes D.B.’s career choice and D.B. can only visit once a week. Holden talks about D.B. less dearly in the beginning of the novel after his brother D.B. has moved to Hollywood, especially compared to his flashback when D.B. accompanies him to the movies before moving away. Distance can definitely be a reason for this lack of dearness. Since D.B. is farther away, Holdenâ€⠄¢s connection with him unmistakably suffers. Distance also proves to hinder strong relationships in the case of Holden and Jane throughout The Catcher in the Rye. Jane never appears in the novel as anything other than an aspect of Holden’s memories, which shows that not being able to see each other has broken up their strong connection. The distance between the two proves to be the ultimate hindrance to the relationship they once had. Holden merely holds on to past memories in fear that they will somehow be altered or that somehow he will lose all of their happy childhood times together. When Holden’s roommate Stradlater from Pencey goes on a date with Jane, Holden shows that his relationship with Jane was once strong by constantly asking about her and mentioning obscure details about her life, details that most people usually would not take notice of. He says, â€Å"She’s a dancer[]Ballet and all. She used to practice about two hours every day right in the middle of the hottest weather and all. She was wo rried that it would make her legs all lousy[]I used to play checkers with her all the time† (Salinger 31). This quote shows how close Holden and Jane once were because he knows so much about her, down to an unusual anxiety about her legs. After Holden has left Pencey, he tries to call Jane from a payphone but â€Å"her phone didn’t answer so [he] had to hang up† (Salinger 136). This quote further proves that Holden and Jane were once close but that the distance and inability to see each other have ruined their relationship since they still remain out of touch. Holden’s rather estranged relationship with Jane shows that even the strongest relationships are susceptible to damage due to distance. The last close relationship between Holden and a minor character that goes awry as a result of distance is his relationship with his younger brother Allie. Allie tragically passed away at the age of eleven after suffering from leukemia, and his death left Holden’s entire family in grief, especially Holden himself. Holden still holds his brother dearly in his heart and thinks about him very often, but sadly Allie is in a completely unidentifiable place. Though spiritually they are still close, the fact that Allie no longer physically with Holden proves to be very difficult for Holden to endure. Holden exemplifies his closeness with Allie when he describes him after writing a composition about his younger brother’s baseball mitt, saying, â€Å"You’d have liked him† (Salinger 38). When Phoebe interrogates Holden, asking what he likes, Holden says â€Å"‘I like Allie’† (Salinger 171). Phoebe then chimes in that Allie is dead and Holden seem s quite offended. Holden then says, â€Å"‘I know he’s dead! Don’t you think I know that? I can still like him, though, can’t I? Just because somebody’s dead, you don’t just stop liking them, for God’s sake’† (Salinger 171). This quote shows how close Holden still feels to Allie because Allie is one of the only things in his life that he genuinely likes, but Holden’s relationship with his younger brother will never be the same again because Allie is no longer with him. The physical distance strains their relationship because Holden continues loving and thinking about his brother, yet never receives any love in return because Allie is only present in spirit. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden’s distance from the minor characters he was once close with proves to be a major detriment to his ability to form relationships. He is no longer in touch with his childhood friend Jane, his older brother D.B. has decided to move away to pursue bigger and better things in Hollywood, and his younger brother Allie is with him spiritually but is physically in a completely different place. This distance breaks up Holden’s most secure relationships. Distance can enter into a struggle for any close relationship, no matter what the situation. Humans have a potential to grow distant either due to environmental factors they cannot control or due to simply moving on and meeting new people. George Orwell began the essay with his perspective on British domination. He stated that it is evil and alongside of that it is oppressive. He felt hatred and guilt toward himself and the Burmese people. The people of Burma did not feel threatened because the narrator of the story had killed the elephant. The Burmese people have lost their dignity and integrity while trying to fight off the British imperialism. Orwell uses allegories to describe his experience of the British imperialism and he had his own view of the matter of slaying the elephant. He successfully used ethos, pathos, and logos by attracting the audience to read his story. He had to make a scene in the story to make the people of Burma feel the same emotion. The elephant was the one reason why it makes this story emotional. He used logos to show that he can kill the elephant even if he does not want to so that it does not make him look fool. Logos is used to show logic and persuade an audience by reason. When the author talks about the irony and the reality of imperialism, he compares himself to the figure of a sahib. The comparison to the sahib is a term that was used to name aristocratic rulers. It is an important symbol of their cultural image. HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus found in human beings that primarily infects cells that are part of the immune system, but can affect other cell types as well. HIV is what is called a retrovirus, meaning it has the coding system of RNA opposed to DNA. AIDS is a virus that is caused by HIV and has many different symptoms that vary with different individuals. HIV causes symptoms such as severe infections that can lead to pneumonia and changes of the skin like red or purple patches. The virus can spread through sexual contact or the exchange of blood. HIV can be transmitted through sexual contact, exchange of blood, and childbirth or breastfeeding. Chances are they will give you some increased role to help prepare you for being in that role or at the very least you can pick their brain concerning principal best practices. Every bit of experience and knowledge will help when you land your first principal’s job.Earn a Master’s Degree – Although most principals will earn a Master’s degree in an area such as educational leadership, there are states that allow you to become a principal with a combination of any master’s degree, the required teaching experience, along with passing the license/certification process. Most people will continue to teach full time while taking master’s courses part time until they earn their degree. Many school administration m asters’ programs now cater to teacher’s offering one night a week courses. The summer can be used to take additional classes to expedite the process.   The final semester typically involves an internship with hands-on training that will give you a snapshot of what a principals job actually entails. Obtain a School Administrator License/Certification – This step is remarkably similar to the process for getting your teacher license/certification. You must pass a test or series of tests related to the specific area you want to be a principal in whether that be an elementary, a middle level, or a high school principal.Interview for a Principal’s Job – Once you have earned your license/certification, then it is time to start looking for a job. Do not be discouraged if you do not land one as quickly as you thought. Principal’s jobs are intensely competitive and can be difficult to land. Go into every interview confident and prepared. As you interview, remember that as they are interviewing you, you are interviewing them. Do not settle for a job. You do not want a job at a school which you do not genuinely want with all the stress a principal’s job can bring.   While searching for a principals job, gain valuable administrator experience by voluntee ring to help out your building principal.   More than likely they will be willing to allow you to continue on in an internship type of role. While there are many groups upon which the power of numbers has been a ticket to relief the three groups presented here are African American slaves, native Americans and women. The institute of slavery was a shame to say the least. Millions were killed and beaten. People starved and went naked in the deep winter’s frost. Slaves were afforded no rights and often lived their whole lives without the slightest taste of luxury. Even though they witnessed the causal lifestyles of their masters, most slaves dared not even dream of having such provisions for themselves. However, slavery was born to die. Being unjust, it could not stand for eternity. Once the slaves learned of their power, the power of their unity against the oppressor, they found the courage to stand up for themselves and fight. Of course there were the brave few who did stand up by revolting and running away, but their position in the overall freedom of all is as sparks to a forest fire. Tales of success spread throughout the slave population and they dared lift up their heads. It was when more came to believe that they came to organize themselves and wield a great dent into the mountain of their bondage. Gathered together they strengthened each other and were given the courage to fight. Fredrick Douglas had been a slave, yet he railed his people together and encouraged them. He said, â€Å"I talked to them of our want of manhood, if we submitted to our enslavement without at least one noble effort to be free† (Douglass, 1845; p.70). Such was a message that no slave had heard before. They were empowered. Yet, it was not until after such gatherings that Douglass and many other slaves were afforded their freedom. Native Americans also had their struggles. The very land in which they has built their civilizations was snatched from up under their feet. At one point they had to return to being nomads, being constantly pushed around by the ever growing new world. At the beginning of America’s establishment, Native Americans were given neither rest nor respect. They were considered heathens by the self-proclaimed righteous white men that had themselves departed from a country where they were not completely free. It took the Native Americans’ joining of forces to come to be recognized. Even today their groups are advocates for return of the land that was stolen from them. While they have not succeeded in taking over the territories that they once owned, they have received recognition from the government and were granted various benefits. Another group that found strength in numbers is women. Women have been suppressed throughout history and still there are differences made between sexes in regard to promotion, pay, and in many other areas. Women were the property of their husbands, many of them treated as slaves. The man of the house was the abs olute master. Women were not allowed to be educated or hold jobs. They could not vote or hold office. It took a revolution for women’s rights to be granted. The stories of women burning their bras in the streets are commonly known today. However, if it had been only one woman burning her bra she would have probably been labeled as one suffering from a mental illness
